Child Advocacy Group Petitions Gov Otti To Address Alarming Cases Of Missing Children In Abia – SaharaReporters.com

The Child Protection Network (CPN), Abia State has issued a passionate plea to Governor Alex Otti to address the escalating cases of missing children in the state.

CPN in a statement signed by its State Coordinator, Amb. Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu on Wednesday, voiced deep concern over the recurring incidents that have shaken communities since November 2023.

“Despite our efforts, we remain deeply troubled by the increasing cases of missing children,” Nwosu said.

The incidents reported include the disappearance of four siblings in Umuahia on November 28, 2023, and the abduction of three children by a co-tenant in Umuahia on December 7, 2023.

Most recently, on May 17, 2024, three children from the Osinachi family went missing after boarding a tricycle.

“These incidents have caused immense suffering to affected families and have cast a shadow over the reputation of Abia State,” Nwosu emphasized.

The situation underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to prevent child abductions and trafficking.

CPN Abia, therefore, proposed a set of measures aimed at addressing the situation, including strengthening law enforcement by ensuring swift arrest and prosecution of perpetrators, enhancing regulatory oversight of orphanages and social homes, and reviewing and fortifying child protection laws.

Additionally, they advocated for robust community engagement through awareness campaigns and neighborhood safety networks, as well as the provision of critical support services for rescued children and vulnerable communities.

“Child abductions and trafficking are preventable,” CPN affirmed. “CPN Abia is ready to collaborate with Governor Alex Otti’s administration to secure the safety and well-being of children in Abia State.”
