NEW YORK STATE (WSYR-TV) — A report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that New York State has one of the highest child poverty rates in the U.S.

One in five children in NYS are living in poverty, according to the report, and New York’s child poverty rate ranked as the ninth worst state in the nation in 2022.

The report also found that over the last decade, the national child poverty rate has fallen, but it hasn’t fallen in New York, creating a 2.5% gap. If the NYS child poverty rate were equal to the U.S. child poverty rate, it would mean 100,000 fewer children in New York would be living in poverty, stated the report.

Upstate cities are hit particularly hard by child poverty.

Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse have double the child poverty rate of other U.S. cities with similar populations, according to the report. Syracuse also ranks second for the largest cities in the U.S. with the highest rates of child poverty.

DiNapoli says expanding the federal child tax credit could help with the state’s child poverty issues.
